Search engines
Search engine sites return lists of web pages
based on the search critiera you enter. No one search engine has
catalogued the entire web, so sometimes it will pay to use more
than one. Often the search engine will find thousands of web pages
that match your search. In those cases explore the advanced search
options that most search sites provide to narrow down the search.
The search engines listed below are all great
places to start. Use these links - Ask
Jeeves, Google, Yahoo
- or enter your search term directly into the search forms on this

Directories
Directory sites provide a catalogue of web sites organised into
categories. You start with the top-level categories and work your
way through one or more sub-categories to find the list of web sites
about the subject you're interested in. Rather than being compiled
by computers as search engines are, directories are usually compiled
by people.
The two most popular directory sites are probably:
DMOZ - The Open Directory Project
Yahoo Directory (scroll down
Yahoo's home page to access the directory)
Meta-search sites
Meta-search sites return listings from multiple search engines
in response to your query. A popular choice is Dogpile
which has both UK and whole web search options.
